Improvement 09: More suitable activities for young people, particularly boys
West End Women and Girls Centre provides support for girls and women in the West End of Newcastle. The Centre was given part of Elswick Park for a community garden where the Women’s Gardening Group grows fruit, vegetables and flowers. This helps the women learn new skills and build their self esteem, confidence and fitness.

During lively discussions the group developed ideas to tackle something they felt would help not only their local area but have city-wide benefits.
They identified a need for more suitable activities for young people, particularly boys. They feel that activities should be open to all, not just young people involved in anti-social behaviour. Also, more information is needed about youth activities in local areas.

The group’s ideas have been captured in their design for a scarecrow they have made which was displayed at the event.
