Improvement 09: More suitable activities for young people, particularly boys

Progress Update

Information from the Feedback Event held on 22/03/10

To make the improvement happen:

  • Funding is needed

  • Buildings (old or new) need to be made available

  • More workers are needed – particularly men

  • Youth Work training courses are needed

  • Education: tell young people about becoming a youth worker!

  • Cross generational work could help with life skills

  • More advertising/information about existing clubs and projects

Rod Stapley, Newcastle City Council’s Lead Specialist for Integrated Youth Services stated:

  • There is no new funding but a review of current youth provision is being carried out

  • We need preventative youth work in government policies

  • Current policy favours targeted youth work

  • Parent and carer participation in youth work is being encouraged in Newcastle – through schools, youth centres etc. as well as young people’s participation

Buildings:

  • There is currently an audit being done of all community buildings in Newcastle

  • More local people need to use community buildings in their area and encourage others to use them

Training:

  • Need more information on how young people are being encouraged into the youth work field

Advertising:

  • ‘Plings’: Places to go and things to do for young people – only available online – the group suggested papers in schools

  • There are lots of activities happening in Newcastle but they are under-used, this could be due to a lack of advertising or the appropriateness of activities

Next Steps:

  • Rod Stapley will take the groups ideas away and discuss them further and then meet the group again with more information
