Improvement 03: Visual communications on Metro trains
The Deaflink project at Newcastle Healthy City works to improve access to education, health, employment, leisure and social opportunities for Deaf, Deafblind, Deafened and Hard-of-Hearing people in Newcastle.

Deaflink’s proposed improvement aims to tackle communication breakdown. This is the most common barrier Deaf, Deafblind, Deafened and Hard-of-Hearing people face in their daily lives. They have identified a need for visual messages to be displayed on Metro trains so that people who cannot hear the audible announcements will know which station the train is approaching or be advised in any emergencies. This will help increase their feelings of equality, independence and respect.

Deaflink feel that this system could also benefit hearing people who listen to music or talk on their mobile phones while on the trains. They used role play to demonstrate their proposed improvement at the event.
