Improvement 31: Improve access to public transport for people with mobility scooters

Cowgate Chatterbox Club meets once a week at Highmoor Court to socialise and get involved in activities together around healthy living.  Their ages range from 50 to over 80.

During their weekly meeting the group discussed the impact of mobility scooters being banned from the Metro. The group felt that mobility scooter users who do not have access to private transport are isolated and the ban impacts on people’s freedom of movement.

The group has suggested a range of ideas to solve some of the problems associated with mobility scooters. These include introducing a mobility scooter driving licence, adding an extra carriage or a designated ‘priority carriage’ on the Metro with a ramp for mobility scooters (this could also benefit cyclists who are currently banned from using the Metro) and having a mobility scooter hire scheme with scooters at all main Metro stations.
