Improvement 12: The sustainability of old buildings
This group of women, aged from 55-80 years old, meets each week at Benwell Hall in the West End of the City for discussion and chatter while they enjoy activities such as knitting, sewing, making clippie mats, baking and flower arranging.
The ‘Knit and Natter’ group was keen to get involved in Newcastle Citizens Assembly as they have lots of ideas, life experiences and bundles of knowledge to offer.

The group’s proposed improvement was about the sustainability of old buildings, renovating instead of pulling down and giving old properties a new lease of life. They highlighted the renovation of Bishops Avenue - now known as ‘The Street of Many Colours’ - as an example of good practice. They illustrated their ideas by creating knitted buildings.
