Improvement 07: Improved access to public toilets
The Elders Council provides an effective voice for elders resident or active in Newcastle, on issues concerning their quality of life, health and wellbeing.
Decreasing numbers of public toilets disadvantage citizens of all ages. Many older people feel excluded from joining in activities because of uncertainty about easy access to toilet facilities. The Elders Council has identified that while existing toilets are clean and well maintained, they are under provided in certain busy areas. They propose better signposting to existing public toilets, and adoption of a well-publicised ‘Use our Loos’ scheme.

Through subsidy or help in kind local businesses could open up their facilities for public use and, in turn, benefit from more customers coming into their premises. This would bring greater comfort and convenience for all citizens, not just older people, and create a more attractive environment for visitors and tourists.
